April 1, 2008 -- Caffeine and music are about to compose another duet.
Red Bull, the energy drink, wants to follow Starbucks' lead and get into the branded record label business, The Post has learned.

According to several sources close to the situation, Red Bull's music endeavors, which include sinking millions of dollars into a recently constructed recording studio in Santa Monica, Calif., are all part of the company's plans to launch a branded record label by year's end.

"They want to at least put something out digitally, and maybe physically [under their own brand] by the end of the year," said a music industry executive with knowledge of Red Bull's plans.

Other sources said the energy drink thinks its brand can fill a void with the young male demographic and has been giving free studio time to a number of alternative indie rock bands in the hopes of initially signing three or four of them to the label.

"They see a wide-open lane for rock," said one source who has used Red Bull's studio. "They are a lifestyle-based brand that does a lot with snowboarders, skaters, the young Hollywood set, so they think they could have success breaking rock bands."

Sources said Red Bull's studio is being run by former Universal A&R rep Greg Hammer, who's also handling marketing through his Grace Marketing company. Sources also said Matt Pinfield, former VJ for MTV's "Headbanger's Ball," and a woman named Heaven MacPherson are also involved in the project, though they were unsure in what capacity.

A spokeswoman for Red Bull said that the company "has been actively supporting music and musicians for over 15 years" with projects such as Red Bull Music Academy and Red Bull Music Labs. She confirmed that Red Bull is providing artists with free studio time, but denied that it was being done with any strings attached.

As for the record label itself, the spokeswoman said she couldn't comment on rumor and speculation.

But one sign that the record label might be more than just rumor could be gleaned from the fact that Red Bull is constructing a Web site called Red Bull Records and has set up e-mail addresses for employees ending in redbullrecords.com

Sources said Red Bull is treating the label as more than just a vanity project and plans to put real money behind the effort. Indeed, part of the reason why a firm launch date hasn't been set yet is because the company is still trying to work through the business model and wants to be extra cautious about its costs given the slowdown in the overall economy.

For instance, sources said there is still some debate as to whether Red Bull would seek distribution through a major label or try to leverage the distribution of its drink product to set up in-store displays and kiosks much in the same way that Starbucks does in its stores. peter.lauria@nypost.com

The Miami-born MC has appeared on both of T-Pain's full length releases, Rappa Ternt Sanga (2005) and Epiphany (2007) and toured the globe extensively alongside T-Pain. Dizm's debut single, "Beam Me Up," was produced by Atlanta hitmaker Bangladesh and features T-Pain and Rick Ross. "Beam Me Up" was made available by Nappy Boy Digital as an itunes exclusive on May 20, 2008 and will receive a web-wide release in the first week of June. "Beam Me Up" will also impact mainstream urban radio on June 16, 2008.

Also Billboard.com reports that T-Pain has signed some other artists too: Nappy Boy's other arists include Young Cash, an MC from Jacksonville, Fla., Sophia Fresh, a female R&B group from Houston that Pain describes as a contemporary TLC, and R&B singer Jay Lyriq from Tallahassee, Fla. Did you know that John Legend has his own record label?

John Legend has his own label through Atlantic Records called HomeSchool. He has a British singer/rapper/songwriter/producer signed to it whose name is Estelle. Her first album, "Shine" will be the first release on John Legend's HomeSchool label. His brother, Vaughn Anthony, is also signed to that record label. Want to learn more about his label? In an interview with The Associated Press, John Legend said guiding the careers of others is not much different from what he does in his own.

"I don't feel like it's a dramatic shift. Either way I'm a fan of music and I love making records that someone can be proud of," he said.

John Legend co-wrote and sang background on some of the songs on Estelle's album, "Shine," due out in May, and performs a duet with her. He plans to do the same for Anthony, whose album has yet to be completed. But he said he is careful to make sure each of his artists have their own sound.

"I want them to have their own identity and that's the reason why I signed them," he said.

Legend said Estelle caught his ear with her lyrics and voice, and "that unique combination of being able to credibly sing and rap, which not many people have."

His brother clearly did not need help getting Legend's attention, but he says he did not know Anthony was serious about singing until Legend started having success: for the past two years, he has been singing backup for Legend on his tours.

"I'm really frank with him and I really look at it like I'm his mentor," Legend said. "We tease each other, we do everything brothers do."

Jermaine Dupri's new record label, TAG Records

Jermaine Dupri, Island Def Jam Music Group and TAG Body Sprays partnered up to start a new record label, called TAG records. JD's new record label is apparently a hip-hop label based in New York. JD will be the label's president so he will set the creative vision for the label. JD will also be one of the chief decisionmakers for finding and developing the label's new artists. TAG Records will announce their first artist soon. Artists signed to TAG Records will have a multimillion-dollar marketing campaign put behind them which will include television, print, radio, digital and event promotions. This kind of promotion for a brand new artist has never been done before! Best believe that Jermaine will have a lot of demos coming his way!

Jazzy Pha Presents, the new Jazzy Pha Record Label

I went to BMI's star studded event, BMI's Atlanta Urban Unsigned Artist Showcase last night. At this event, Jazzy Pha told the audience that he's starting a new label called Jazzy Pha Presents. He's looking to sign people to his new label and is accepting demos. He said that if your music is hot, he will sign you over a check! I'm not sure where you should send your info, I would google him and find contact info for him and submit your demo, bio, and a picture or your press kit. When I get more information, I will surely pass it on!
